we arrived in mongolia last night technically, as we crossed the border then, but got to our hostel this morning. when we arrived in Sukhbataar, the border town, we had a 3 hour stop (passport control, custons etc) and got a bit of a wander round and there were loads of Mongolian kids hanging round the station and they were all so friendly!! they all wanted their photos taken by us, i think they were impressed that you could see the pictures straight away.we met 3 americans, an english guy and a korean guy on the train and they are all at our hostel which is pretty cool.
We've been wandering round Ulaan Bataar a bit today and have been to a big monestary here with buddhist monks and a huge (26ft high) gold statue. very impressive
We have booked a trip which leaves tomorrow we go to the national park here then have lunch, 2 hours horse riding, then we stay with a nomadic family in a ger (traditional hut type thing) with dinner and breakfast included and a bit of free time in the park and then head back to the hostel saturday afternoon. its only costing us $25, me, mick, John, Tatiana and Mark (the 3 americans) are going and maybe Ian, the english guy, too so should be fun.
all the direct trains from here to bejing are all fully booked so we are going to get a local train to the border then cross the border to china (apparently its very easy and lots of jeeps are ready to take people over for a small fee) then we can get a bus to beijing. it takes an extra seven hours but we can leave any day of the week which fits in much better with our plans and means we get an extra 2 nights here in mongolia, before we need to be in beijing to meet susi. we should arrive there on the thursday afternoon which works out perfectly.
Will write again probably before we leave Mongolia and get the photos uploaded then. Bye!
