Ok, I've been in New York for just under 3 days now.... Here is my summary so far:
Overrated, huge, rude rude rude, unfriendly, expensive, cold (brrrrrrrr).
So as you can tell, I don't love NY.
Had a better day today than yesterday though. I decided to get loads done, so I planned out a little route of sight seeing attractions. First up was Statue of Liberty and Ellis Island. Had another mishap on the subway, so eventually got there at 10am to find the queue for the ferry snaking around Battery Park. Thought I'd try again later so caught the free ferry to Staten Island to kill sometime. This passes nearby the Statue of Liberty; there were also good views of Manhattan. Decided not to get out of the ferry terminal in Staten, so headed back to NYC to join the queue for the main attractions. Got through in about 10 mins eventually - wasn't too bad, just damn cold having to wait around. I was lucky enough to be between 2 groups of English people - actually quite liked listening to the accents after hearing the harsh NY accent for the last few days.
Anyway, I digress...... Couldn't actually get into the Statue as the entrance quota for the day had already been reached - at about 9am apparently. Gutted. Anyway, was nice enough walking around the Statue, although it's a lot smaller than I had expected, and you can barely see it from Manhattan. Next stop was Ellis Island where immigrants were screened in the late 1900s and early 20th century. Couldn't be arsed looking around as it was a bit orientated to the yanks. Headed off back to NYC, and then caught the subway to Times Square.
I decided to get off at Grand Central Station - that is quite an impressive building I must admit. I decided to head away from the glitz and garishness of Times Square to NY Public Library for a bit more culture. It's a really good looking building, and I love the lions at the front of it. Good stuff Mr Architect, whoever you were.
Next was a meander around 42nd St and 5th ave - I decided to save all of 5th Ave for tomorrow, when I'll do some window shopping!! Real shopping is defo out of the question on Fifth ave!!!
Took some snaps of the Crysler building - think this is my fave NY building so far, I really like the way it catches the sunlight.
Well, that was it for today.... And todays summary is - lots of walking, lots of being really cold, and a bit of seeing some sights. Oh, and lots of damn rude people again.
