It was my birthday on Wednesday 18th - if you didn't already know! Can you believe it - after having about a week of great sunny weather, it had to rain and be really windy on my birthday - ruddy typical! I had hoped this year that I'd enjoy my birthday sitting on a beach, but it was not to be. Instead I just hoovered the house, spoke to Anna-Marie and chilled out listening to Bob Marley, not bad. And of course, I scoffed some nice food too! I managed to buy myself a nice hoodie and a t-shirt, thought that it would go against traditions not to go clothes shopping on my birthday.
Then after Kate, Alison and Cos had finished work we headed north out of Wellington up to the National Park. We were travelling in Kate's car (Phoenix) which we'd found out the previous day that it was on its last legs. The garage that Kate had taken it into told her that she basically needed a completely new engine, and that the petrol smell that we'd noticed was petrol leaking from the carburetor, and if the petrol dripped on the exhaust then 'boooooom'....... The mechanic advised Kate not to take the car on any big journeys. Hmmmm. Travelling all the way up to Auckland, then Taupo, then Napier, then back to Wellington. A trip of at least 1000km. Not a big journey at all then.
So off we set, having been warned by Kate that if the car started to feel a bit funny, then we had to grab as much as possible and get out of the car in case it went 'booom'. Making for a stress-free journey. Yeah right.
We battled through the wind and rain and eventually arrived in the same hostel we had stayed the previous weekend. We had planned on popping open some bubbly and eating some nice birthday cake, but it was past 11pm when we got there, and the rest of the hostel was sleeping so it was away to bed for us all. Luckily I'd had a bit of celebrating my b'day on the journey, opening pressies from Anna-Marie, which were great!!
Anyway, we woke up on the Thursday to be greeted by another rainy day. Marvellous. So the walks that we had planned were cancelled, and we decided to head straight up to Auckland to get there for the Big Day Out on the Friday.
After a gruelling 5 hour journey with the whiff of petrol in the air we arrived at the hostel we'd booked in Mt Eden in Auckland. It was a complete dump, looked like something out of a horror film, complete with a small child from the Village of the Damned and the guy who worked there had a limp and looked like the guy from Scary Movie 2. Honestly... you can't make these things up.
But we made the most of it, and I wasted no time in opening the bubbly after a quick chilling in the fridge (the bubbly, not me). Then it was eating of the birthday cake and general celebrations; we were also joined by Tom and Dunc at this stage, so it was 6 drunken people instead of 4. A great time was had by all, sponsored by Jacobs Creek Sparkling Chardonnay Pinot Noir.
