Had a fantastic day - got up early from Te Anau and went to see Milford Sounds - a world heritage centre, as it is so beautiful. The drive up there was pretty spectacular too, at times I really had to concentrate to keep my eyes on the road and not look at the views. There is a 1.5km tunnel along the way, and it is only one lane so we had to wait outside there for a bit.... whilst waiting the car was under attack from cheeky Kea - these are parrots that live in the Southern alps and seem to love pulling rubber off cars and generally being really naughty!! One landed on the windscreen and tried pulling the rubber off the wipers, then another was bouncing around on the top of the car! Was really quite funny, and luckily they were easily scared away.
As soon as I got out of the car in Milford I was surrounded by sandflies - really annoying things that just bite the hell out of me!! I had prepared myself by completely covering my hands and face in insect repellant so managed to avoid being bitten - which is a first for me.
The cruise around the sound was good, although the boat was full of Japanese tourists taking pictures of everything, and a group of women even came up to us and started feeling Kims hair (she's blonde!).... Very strange... And there seemed to be loads of rich old American tourists, making video clips of things. One of the funniest things was when the boat approached a waterfall, which was pretty beautiful and about the height of a 50 storey building - people went absolutely crazy running to get a good picture of it... I'm surprised the boat didn't tip over.
I got some excellent piccies there and of the drive up from Te Anau; which incidentally is supposed to be one of the most scenic drives in the world.... I will have to put them onto the website when I get a chance.
We headed straight from Milford Sound to Gore - the brown trout fishing capital of the world apparently. An early night was had here, nothing much to do around the place and it was raining and really windy so not fishing weather.
