Anyway, today I was leaving Split and heading up to the capital Zagreb. The most reliable form of transport is the bus in Croatia - it was supposed to be a 5 hour ride to Zagreb, compared to about 8 hours on the train. So I bought mz 184KN ticket (about 16 quid, bargain), and got on the bus, which was more like a coach really. My seat was next to a nice old woman, who even offered me a sweet, but I remembered what I had been told and didn't accept one, plus the fact I didn't know what they were.
Split is stated in the Lonely Planet as being ringed by apartment blocks, which thankfully aren't really visible from the harbour, but became more apparent the further away from the sea we got
The bus station is not in the most attractive part of town, or I had made a big mistake in staying here for 3 nights.... I fathomed out the tram system and amongst lots of starings, boarded the right one, which took me through a rather rough part of town, lots of graffiti on any bit of spare wall. I was a complete idiot and missed my tram stop, by which time the heavens had opened and it was lashing it down. I didn't fancz walking in the rain, so got off at the next stop, crossed the road and waited for a tram to take me back to the stop.... and then by some weird idiotic thing I didn't get off at the right stop then either, d'oh! I was tempted to run army style with my heavy backpack, but couldn't be arsed, and thankfully the hostel wasn't too far away. As I was staying for 3 nights I had the luxury of actually being able to unpack my bag, which turned into more of a bag explosion than anything else...
