This beautiful beach combo was a great place to kick off my stay in Costa Rica, especially after the headache of traveling across the border. The Nicaragua border with Costa Rica was horrible. First, I missed my bus because it was late and ended up coming earlier than what they said. Wierd, I know, but it happened. So, I rode a cab to the border for 20 minutes and spent 45 minutes in line waiting for customs. What a nightmare. There were no signs, my backpack was heavy, it was hot, etc etc. By the time I got through that fiasco I realized I had to do it all over again on the Costa Rican side to enter the country. I met a person who I paid $10 to run it through the back door. This was awesome and probably saved me over an hour in line in the heat. It was great. I grabbed a cab to Playa Hermosa where we checked into our hotel. This was the nicest beach yet. White sands, islands in the distance and blue ocean water. The jungle creeped right against the beach and our hotel was 2 blocks away. We got a nice room with a pool for 60bucks. Costa Rica is quite a bit more expensive than Nicaragua...almost $1 for $1. I have been traveling with a book that is awesome and better than Lonely Planet books. Everything it says has been exactly true and can be lived by. Even the bus schedules. We spent two night in this area and visited 3 beaches. Playa Hermosa, Playa Panama, and Playa de Coco. Hermosa was best and Coco was worst. Coco was cool because it had shopping and more restaurants, but the beach was heavily trafficked.
My initial reaction to Ticans is that they are beautiful. It is not uncommon to find tan skin, long dark hair and green eyes. Awesome combo and it is everywhere I turn here. People too are very friendly. Everyone speaks English but I am good at keeping them talking to me in Spanish.I got to see some fun iguanas in this area too. From here we bussed it to Liberia at 5am and transfered buses toward Canas and Upala to head towards Volcan Tenorio. The bus rides were easy. The city of Liberia is very modern and you can find your Burger Kings, Taco Bells, and more. There is allot more money in this country than Nicaragua, it is apparent the american investment is vast. I had a good time at these beaches, but my advice is this. When you find your nice beach, stay there. Don't search for greener grass because it doesn't exist. Instead what you find is wasted time. Enjoy beautiful when it is staring you in the face. AKA, goto Playa Hermosa and stay there. Coco is good for food and shopping, but nothing more. Pescado Loco Bar and restaurant probably had the best seafood I have ever had and it is a block away from the beach in Hermosa. Go there!
I will see this beach again in my dreams. Ciao.
