When we returned to Townsville we enjoyed a day trip to Billabong Animal Sanctuary - held wombats, koalas, lizards and snakes, including a big mamma python - all very cool! Also stroked baby koalas and fed the kangaroos which were just hopping around. Watched the crocodiles getting fed - pretty intense - they jump up so high out of the water to grab the meat. It was amazing. However, the scariest thing there, surprisingly enough, were the huge geese - evil things!
From Townsville we went to Airlie Beach. Stayed in a hostel called Beaches - the best hostel so far. Every room has a decent sized bathroom, little kitchen area, changing area where you can hang clothes (not that we did!) and a balcony. But the best part is that the bar is the best bar in town - huge and packed with travellers, it was great. Arrived quite late, planning on going straight to bed, but we were so impressed with how lively the town was we got ready quick smart and headed out. Did a little crawl (Magnums to Beaches bar to Paddy's Shenanigans, if you're interested) and ended up in an Irish bar dancing the night away, bumping into various people we've met along the way - it's a small world on the backpacker trail (not always a good thing!)
Spent the next morning recovering i.e. greasy food, coca cola and as much paracetomal as we're allowed! Did a spot of shopping (which was ambitious considering how we were feeling) - bought myself a straw cowgirl hat (love it!) before going to our Whitsunday meeting...
