Woooooooo! New York!
After a 5.00am start and a teeny delay, I was in the air and watching Indiana Jones and the Crystal Skull and scoffing peanuts. Continental were great from beginning to end (except the food, but you can't expect much there can you?) and the flihgt was smooth and pleasant. Got talking to the couple next to me who travled to the States a lot and gave me loads of helpful hints.
I had heard horror stories of immigration and customs and was expecting a huge wait but was through in around fifteen minutes - lovely people again. The service here is spectacular. My bag was even one of the first off the aeroplane - I must have good travel karma!
I decided to brave the public transport into Manhattan from Newark - the New Jersey Transit train and the Subway. I think that it gives you a better feel for the place. Very easy, very cheap and very quick - as long as I was arriving in the day, I would definately do this again - beats a $50 cab ride hands down.
I am staying at the YMCA Westesid which is ideal of my trip - private room, friendly people, great location and best of all: a view of Central Park from my window! Just perfect. And cheap as well by New York standards.
The first night I met up with the Spaced Out lot and we had some drinks at Jake's Dilemma and food at The Cottage - the sesame chicken was amazing - I think that Julie called it the Chinese food equivalent of crack. And she was not wrong, it was suberb. More drinking at Deacon Brodies and then bed 24hours after I had got up that morning.
Today I got myself out of bed and had a wander through Central Park - easy to get yourself lost in there! Then went down to Times Square and Grand Central Station before meeting up with the others for lunch - Delta Bar and Grill - amazing food again. Joanna and Sylvain - we need to go here when you come across.
Next stop was FAO Schwarz to see the big piano on the floor from the film Big. It is still there and you can go on it. I was very tempted but there were loads of kids on it and I felt mean jumping into the middle of them. Then Craig and I hit the Apple Store, which is a thing of beauty and filled with things of beauties.
I am just back at the Hostel resting up before we hit Brooklyn later for dinner and drinking. Having such a great time so far. Tomorrow includes shoe shopping, a pub crawl and going out on the town in our finery - should be good!

Woohoo! Sounds like you've having a lot of fun. Can't believe you got a view over central park! V jammy. If you're into sushi or dimsum let me know and I'll try and dig out the names of two amazing places we were taken to while we were in NYC.
Oh, and thank you for my present and CD! I'm in work today, but hopefully I'll get a chance to listen to it later.
Hey up!!
Glad to hear you're having such fun...
Might join you for Malaysia or Japan stretch next year!!
Hope can meet up when you are here for Christmas/wedding and hear all your tales!
xx
Woot!
I am so jealous! I am so glad you got there okay - which Spaced Out-ers have you met out there? I didn't know we had New Yoikers in our little clan. ;o)
Yay
I can't believe you're actually there! Don't buy too many shoes or I'll be even more jealous.
Miss you
