I can't really afford to make it all the way round my trip without a
little work along the way, so as I couldn't sleep the other night, I
applied for a Working Holiday Visa for Australia at 2.00am. By 3.00am
it was filled in, paid for and approved. I am now legally entitled to
work in Oz. Bonza. What excellent service from the Aussie Immigration
website though - it was completely painless.
Not quite sure what I will do with my time out there though. I guess
that work in hostels and bars and other travellery things. And if I
find that I love it, I will try to squeeze in three months of rural
work so that I have the option to qualify for a second year's Working
Holiday Visa if I think I might return before I hit the big Three Oh.
Also aiding my working possibilities, I have just purchased a 60 hour
online TEFL training course. Teaching English has always been at the
back of my mind and I think that the qualification might come in useful
when I get out there. Also, it will keep me occupied in the next four
weeks, so I don't spend the days, counting down the days!

Working in Oz
Hi Helen, Don't, for the love of Jeebus, do the agriculture work thing. Aussie farmers LOVE to rip off backpackers for peanuts (I heard loads of horror stories, even from an Aussie mate's Dad, who's friend is a farmer, and you guessed it, rips off backpackers). Stick to bar work or even office work.
Re: Working in Oz
Yeah, I think that a lot people do their three months farm work to qualify for their second WHV - I don't think that I will wantto go back to work there before I hit the big three-oh anyway, so I don't think that I will be bothering. Bar work all the way - you get to meet more people that way.
