Man it was cold. And windy. Then Nick Welch came and it was better. -PFR

We motored out of Cuttyhunk Harbor just before 8 o'clock this morning.  It was cold with a steady wind out of the north.  We set the main and headed toward Buzzards Tower, moving along at a consistent 5.5/6 knots.  As we adjusted our course at the tower, we lost a little bit of speed and decided to set a reefed jib.  Unfortunately, as we were setting it, Pete noticed a tear in the sun cover on the leech of the sail, and we knew it would just worsen if we left it out in such a steady breeze all day.  We had no choice but to immediately strike the sail.

It was definitely a colder and rougher day than yesterday, and we are all just adjusting and getting into the groove.  As we knew Pete's and Connor's friend Nick was coming to join us, we aimed away from Block Island and toward Rhode Island, and we decided on Point Judith, RI as the day progressed. We arrived around 1600 and settled into Jim's Dock in Jerusalem, RI, just across the way from Point Judith. A nice fisherman greeted us as we were getting situated and preparing to attach the spare jib.  He chatted with us about our plans and let us know it was totally fine to tie up there.  And he gave us a restaurant recommendation - so we took it. First long day out, it seemed like a nice reward. Plus, seeing as it was a bit rough all day, we hadn't felt the motivation or need to make a real lunch (and my body had decided it needed to empty the contents of my stomach over the rail...twice). Mackenzie's gluten-free muffins that we'd had for breakfast were delicious, but by this point, we were all famished. We had a sunset walk to the restaurant, and enjoyed some delicious food after a long day.  And when we returned to Hejira at the end of the night, Nick was just arriving. A welcome addition on board.

There is something very civilized about coming into port for dinner each evening. My favorite way to travel.
