Saturday July 16th we left Slovenia in the morning but not before stopping at a bakery to discover that the price of food outside the touristy town of Bled is very inexpensive and the baked rolls and goodies were delicious..more than we needed for only 3 euros.
Our drive through Slovenia was smooth and beautiful. We drove through forested mountains passing by the capital of Ljubljana and down to the southwest to reach Italy near Trieste at the border. Once we were in Italy, it seemed to become more "tropcial-ish" right away..we could tell we were out of the mountain region and headed right towards the Adriatic Coast
We are arriving on the biggest holiday of the year for Venitians...the Redentore Festival. For the locals, this is a big big party to celebrate the end of the black plague. We were happy to learn that tonight there will be a big fireworks display over the lagoon. In the meantime we have to take the vaporetto (water bus) with our luggage to our room in Venice. There is an alteration in the vaporetti schedule so we take one to the San Pietro stop which is on opposite side of the main islands than where we would normally go...so we walk through this tiny little island in Castello (our neighborhood in Venice which is at the tail if you think about Venice as shaped like a fish). We find our room recognizing the area from the street view map online. Our room is the attic of a Venetian couple who rents out rooms... it is a steep climb up to our third floor but we make it and settle in before heading out for the evening.
We wander around our street for awhile exploring the area.. we are on Via Garibaldi near the Giardini and Aresanale vaporetti stops. The area has a wide street (very rare in Venice, this might be the only one) and garden park areas as well. The shops and restaurants are all getting ready for the festivities of the night. The lagoon is filled with boats of all sizes from little rowboats to the giant car ferry all of which are loaded with people!...and there are more boats arriving every second. There are the sights and sounds of a big party everywhere
It is not difficult for us to get some sleep tonight.... Buona Notte Venezia!!
