We managed to make an early start, bought extra provisions and set off along highway 1 to highway 83. At first the road was straight and boring then we came across 3 hydro powered electricity stations, each one more impressive than the last. We had lunch at Benmore and drove through Omarama onto highway 8 and took 2 detours. The first was a 40 km round trip, we missed a signpost and ended up on an unmade road, big mistake although the views of wild lupins were amazing. The second took us to Lake Ohau and Ski resort, this was used in Filming Lord of the Rings.
We had a refreshment stop at Twizel, a town built to look after the Hydro dam built in 1970 but kept going due to the Mount Cook area. We then went up highway 80 to Mount Cook village, at that time the mountains were covered in cloud. We retraced our steps to The Glentanner Park Centre where we cooked a curry and were entertained by a pheasant trying to beg for food outside our lodge window. Marvellous views outside our window of lake Pukaki and Mount Cook.
