Where I stayed
on the big train
Managed to sit next to a nerdy train spotter on the train which just made the journey all that little bit more special....Scott now has lots of useless info about American trains! There were no Russians on this train so it was nice and quiet and managed to get a few hours sleep before arriving in San Fransisco! Would recommend this part of the Zephyr route to anyone, it was excellent.
Although it took the longest route possible and was a pretty slow moving piece of machinery, I really enjoyed myself on this train. From Denver to San Fransisco it went thought the Rockies which was spectacular, then it went though Utah which was even more amazing! "I've never been to Mars but I think that's what it would look like" was an accurate observation of Utah from one of our fellow travellers. There was just stuff going on everywhere you looked. There was a big observation carridge with a glass ceiling so you could really soak up the atmosphere. We seen the most wonderful sunset, the sky was a very bright firey orange. The route took us through a 6 mile tunnel, the train was in complete darkness for a full 10 minutes until we came out the other side!
