Prince Edward Island is where the author Lucy Maude Montgomery lived and used as the setting for the Anne of Green Gables books. Heather had loved the books as a child and having seen the mini series on TV decided it would be a good place to visit. For any one who saw the series on TV the country side looks just as beautiful but unfortunately the tourism monster has gone berserk and there is even a tourist drive called "Anne Country"! There are lots of expensive museums, theme'd souvenir shops and Japanese tourists. Apparently the Japanese study the book at school! I think Lucy Maude Montgomery would turn in her grave if she saw the crazy tourism thing about her simple lovely books. We loved Prince Edward Island (PEI for short) though despite the "Anne" madness. I did go and photograph the house that belonged to Lucy's grandparents where she spent her holidays as a child and later came back to write her novels. Unfortunately the weather was very cold, wet and windy for our 4 days there. We arrived in PEI by way of a new high bridge from New Brunswick which is 13 klms long! As we drove across a cruise boat went underneath us. When we left it was by car ferry, a 90 minute reasonably smooth trip across the Northumberland Straits back to Nova Scotia.
