Eventually, we had to get out of the hotel, so we caught a cab to the train station to see if we could check our bags. The cab driver was hilarious - he was playing some well dodgy techno-rap music and when I gave him a $20 bill for the fair, he pulled change out of his sock and gave us a lecture on accepting bad bills as payment.
We waited around for a while for an attendant to come back and then were able to check our bags in, which meant we could go back into the city for the day. We had a wander round the old part of the city, which is run down but has really pretty buildings, and then back down to Beale
Even though it was a Monday, there was very little open - we wanted to go to a place called Mud Island, which is a scale reconstruction of the Mississippi river on an island in the Mississippi (Mississippiception!) but it wasn't open :(
At around 5pm, we headed back to the train station, stopping off at a convenience store on the way to pick up supplies. The train station had wifi, so I managed to catch a hold of the Heals and speak to them for the first time in our trip via FaceTime, and we also had a lovely chat with the ever-wonderful Gellie. Lovely!
It was actually quite exhausting sitting doing nothing (for some bizarre reason) and we were massively relieved when 9.30pm came and we were allowed to get onto the train. As it was an overnight train, we had another room and another car attendant, Lonnie, who was lovely. Pretty much as soon as we were on, we had our beds made up and started to settle down to sleep.
Goodbye Memphis, you've been wonderful, and we hope to see you again some time - Chicago here we come!
