We could feel it looming - like the promise of Argentina's paved,
painted, signed-posted roads after the torturous, dust and gravel
roads of Chile - the return of English to our daily lives. Of
course, in Tobago it's not quite English that's spoken, mon, but we
got by.
We were tired. Fatigued from too much Spanish, too much must do
this, must see that, too much manaņa, manaņa. Tobago was to be an
easy tropical interlude with sun dappled, white sand beaches,
intoxicating with the scent of over ripe guavas, bamboo tinkling
like wind chimes in the breeze.
We hired a motorcycle, we overheated, we broke down, we fell off, we
crashed into banks, bugs feared us. We zipped around the island -
the English have been here - through the towns of Crown Point,
Glamorgan, Charlotteville, Scarborough, dotted with homes, in an
acre of manicured lawn, painted coral pink and lime green with white
gingerbread trims.
We snorkelled at Englishman's Bay and Pirates Cove. We ate tropical
fish, exotic fruit, pumpkin and coconut ice cream. We dived with
morays, nurse sharks, king angel fish and sunfish through soft
corals like forests of ostrich plumes.
We unwound, luxuriated in warm water, slept in the sun, ordered
drinks in English.
