Thursday 23rd - Polesworth - Warwickshire

11 miles
2 locks

We have been down the Coventry Canal before but only been through Coventry itself once. This canal was built to connect the fast growing town with the Trent and Mersey Canal (originally called the Grand Trunk) and to provide Coventry with cheap coal from Bedworth Coalfield. Today it is a narrow canal, made narrower by the growth of reeds along the offside and it is very twisty and turny and has lots of bridges close together. At this busy time of year you are always approaching bridges with at least one boat coming in the opposite direction. So we have had a busy day with lots of concentration required from the helmsperson (mostly Bryan).

Discovered this morning that my favourite TV programme starts again tonight so a satellite signal is essential when mooring. Having passed lots of lovely places during the day we were surrounded by woods once we left Tamworth. We found a possible space and tried to get into the side but it had an unseen ledge below the water so we moved on. I walked ahead along the towpath with the compass so that I could locate SE while Bryan followed behind. I found a possible space and had to search below the overgrown bank to see if there was piling/arnco to hook up to and there was. So we pulled in and tested the signal and we got it straight away. So here we are. The weeds are growing high alongside us, there is the M42 about 50 yards behind and a railway line about 80 yards to our left and the boat is tilting ever so slightly as the water is a little shallow here. But I will be able to watch Waterloo Road tonight.
