Where I stayed
On the Shroppie
Bryan did go for a wander round the op shops this morning in Market Drayton and I went with him. We were both amused at the off licence / convenience shop that sold trainers. That's a bit like Market Drayton we feel, not quite sure what it is meant to be.
We had lunch then set off to do the 5 Tyrley locks and find somewhere nice to moor.
The first 2 locks, going upstream, were DIRE. So much by wash pouring across the entrance to the locks that it threw me off course and I had to reverse madly to prevent a collision with the off side wall. I insisted that Bryan come back and hold the front rope while I had a second attempt, which was successful
Shortly after this we went through the very deep rock cutting near Woodseaves, dated 1840. Very impressive this is, cut out of the rock by men with no powered machines. The height of the bridges, which are only footbridges, show the height of the cutting. It was very narrow and not always with room enough to pass another boat. The warning at the beginning of the cutting didn't fill me with confidence - for safety's sake, keep to max speed limit of 2 mph and beware of rock falls. We did pass a recent landslide and BW were arriving to do something with it.
There were lots of lovely places to stop, but most of the bank was edged with concrete and often these have a concrete ledge under the water which makes for an uncomfortable mooring so we had to go considerably further than we hoped but eventually stopped at a visitors mooring, with rings, no TV signal (trees in the wrong place) and poor internet connection, again because of the proximity of the trees. However, it is a lovely evening and we have had sun for most of the day. Bryan has got supper on, I have a good book to read and all's right with the world.
