Wednesday 30th
Didn't move off today. Instead Bryan finished off the painting of the weed hatch. You can't see it from the outside but it was in serious need of the rust being dealt with. I finished washing the curtains so they won't be done again for another 12 months.

We set off this morning intending to fill up with water and empty the loos and rubbish, which we did. We got as far as Great Haywood and didn't go any further. The weather was a bit overcast and started to rain so we found a mooring spot and had lunch intending to go on later when the weather improved. Then we decided it was actually quite a good place to stay so we didn't go any further. Bryan then had another go at getting the pensions office to sort out his state pension in the afternoon.

This really is a lovely stretch of canal and very interesting. I remember from a previous visit the lovely packhorse bridge over the river along which the Anson family who lived at Shugborough Hall had to walk to church on Sunday mornings as the bridge wasn't wide enough for a horse and carriage. They did have an iron bridge built so they could ride and the bridge still stands but doesn't go anywhere now. The Shugborough estate now belongs to the National Trust who have leased the property to Staffordshire County Council who now manage the whole estate.

There are a row of house alongside the canal which have amazing gardens on 3 levels with a distance of about 80' between upper and lower levels and house owners have done quite imaginative things with them.

Bought some eggs as we approached Great Haywood. I've seen them by the side of the road for sale but not by the side of a bridge on the canal. Bought some good veg at the canalside farm shop too. It's a really good one. It even has a nursery and PYO strawberries.
