We went to a puppet show of our own accord...
Entry 4 of 4 | show all | print this entry |
Our journey in China has come to an end. Spectacularly. With lights. To celebrate the arrival of Pete Rossi in Hong Kong, we accompanied him and "cheeky chappie" Jamie to the amazing "Hong Kong Symphony of Lights" on the harbour. This consisted of some small flashing lights - like four of them - and some jazzy green lasers which couldn't been seen because Hong Kong is basically permanantly enveloped in a big cloud. For this reason we had earlier in the day forgone the opportunity to go up the famous peak, and instead lils, Hat, Pete and Kitty went to a chinese photo booth where we had stickers made of ourselves. Pete was a Panda with glasses. So then we bade farewell to Harry and the gang and our swedey lady friends, and made for the plane, picking up some Oreos on the way. And some Burger King. And some Millie's Cookies. So now we are in Hanoi. Lils has already contracted CHRONIC SUNBURN from the harmful sun's rays, even though it was cloudy. Hanoi is basically a race track for motorbikers. We must dice with death every time we wish to cross a road. Which is often. Yesterday we followed the Lonely Planet walking tour - so great - and it lead us to see many hidden surprises, like this small house which was a public temple instead of a sitting room. And the Vietnamese present their Gods with beer and Oreos as offerings. We saw streets of every nature, dedicated to one item, such as rope. Why you need a whole road dedicated to identical rope shops we do not know. The Vietnamese are a strange race, Lils thinks they all look like Chris Ackroyd's brother. Today one said "hello funky monkey" to her. For no reaosn at all. We are staying in a backpackers' hostel, in a DORM. It is called "The Nunnery". Great. We are sharing with a motley crew, including a "NewYork Chinese" lady called "Lynn", or "Ling", we do not know which and we do not want to ask. We saw a live rat and a cockroach in the space of 3 hours. Hat saw 4 deceased cockroaches in a "changing room" (more like a morgue for cockroaches) when she was stressfully trying to find some linen attire, because leggin' are a no no in the heat of Hanoi. Lils broke with traveller tradition and had a manicure, because she can't have fake nails when kayaking through Halong Bay, which we are visiting on wednesday. There is also more trekking, although we have disposed of all trekking clothes, an unfortunate decision, and so aim to do the trek in "small Lonsdale shorts." This evening we voluntarily attended a water puppet show. god knows why as Hattie hates puppets and Lils is not the world's greatest fan of small wooden objects with creepy faces dancing on water. but she did like 'the dance of the four animals', ie. the end of the show. Hattie liked 'the enchanting lullaby' which in the olden days young maids were banned from hearing as it is such a magical sound that they would surely fall in love with the mucician. But the musician was a woman and therefore I resisted her magical spell. Still, at least the hour spent sitting in the theatre allowed Hattie's feet to dry after jumping into a puddle for fear of the afore mentioned rat.
