Day 196 Tue 23rd May 2006
An evening reminiscing in Basti

I couldn't get to sleep last night, and around 1am got up to have a drink of water. There was no bottled water left in the house, so I went for the only other option left to me, the watermelon I had brought earlier in the day. I managed to get through half of it! I also rang home around 2am, I thought they may have called me yesterday, but they said they hadn't realised we came back from our tour already. I eventually fell asleep around 4am, I think...

Remember we had that bet about starting the bike, well it took Soma 21 kicks to get it started this morning, so yeah he lost the bet, miserably! Didn't really do much today at Pind, we went to Nakodar for a bit and I brought a mop and bucket. Laxmi is still on strike and hasn't cleaned my end of the house for four days now. I ended up sweeping and mopping the whole place today. The tile people came and dropped the tiles off this morning but there was no sight of Ismail and his crew. The satellite TV guy was nowhere to be found either. The electric had been off since the storm started last night, and it didn't look like it was coming back anytime soon.

I packed up my backpack and got on the bike around 4pm to come to Jalandhar, I stopped off at Lakha's along the way and got here around 6pm. Went straight to the office and checked my mail. I had sent an email to everyone about updating the site a few days ago, and dropped a comment on it about lack of emails from people. I had loads of reply's to deal with, it was quiet funny to see people making excuses for their lack of contact.

After the office I went to Neel Kamel and chilled there with Ashni Uncle for a while before coming to Basti. Everyone who came from England has gone back now and it's just the regular members of the family left. Things are very quiet in the house and the fact the uncle is not around is more apparent now than ever before. I stayed up till around 2am talking with Auntie, Alka and Rujni. Auntie talked about events during the last year or so and how they had been all over the place for treatment. It was the first time I had actually sat down and talked with them about things, Auntie wanted to know about the last few moments before uncle passed away. By the end we were reminiscing about what a fantastic life uncle had lived and what a difference he had made to people lives, not just the family but other people who he met in during his amazing life. He was one in a million...
