Day 184 Thurs 11th May 2006
On the hunt for a car.

I got up at 8.30am so we could make an early start and get to Jalandhar while it was still cool (well as cool as it gets this time of year). I awoke to find my right eye had swollen up over night and I couldn't open it (see pic). I have no idea what caused it but it's quite painful, but I soldiered on defiantly. It was still around 10am by the time we left for Jalandhar, The three of us (Soma, Gagan and I) went in Gagan's car.

The first stop was Ajit's music store, I had to pick up another skin for my Dhol at home (yesterdays one didn't fit) and Anil's Dhol case. After that we went to this car dealer called Makhan, we saw a 1986 Gypsy (old shape Suzuki Vitara), it was fully loaded, AC, Wheels, flared arches, tinted windows and it had a diesel engine in it, the only problem was it was too old. We went over to Basti next, Pawan was going back to the UK and he agreed to take Anil's Dhol case back, so I went to drop it off to him. We were not having much luck with the car hunt so I called Gauthem and he gave me the number of a police officer friend of his called Ajay, he quite high up in the police and is one of those plain clothed officers that doesn't actually have to do anything! He was free today so we picked him up and he took us around to a few people he knew (well actually I think we went to every dealer in Jalandhar). The guy is big, well over 6ft and has quite a very dominant personality, he can talk for India too. Everything he said was more like a command than a request, it was quite funny to see him in action, but then scary at the same time, everyplace we walked into you could tell the people were scared of him, it was all 'han ji' (yes sir) this and 'han ji' that.

By late afternoon we had seen every single Gypsy in Jalandhar and I don't know about the other two but I was quite fed up! It was just too hot to be driving around aimlessly. We did see a 2000 model that was in good condition but it was having the AC taken out of it, so we will go back tomorrow to have a good look at it. While we were in Model Town I walked into a shop selling shades, the guy had the new version of the Police shades I brought in Dubai and lost in Rajasthan (still gutted about that), he said he could get the same ones I had for Monday so I will go back to check them out, I hope they are the same because I really want another pair of them. We came back to Pind around 6pm. My eye was still in a bad way so Soma and I went to Nakodar to get some medicine. We got there ok but on the way back the bike gave up on us, it just kept cutting out and it died a death in the next village to ours. I had to do a bit of roadside repairs but managed to get it sorted, it was the main ignition wire that had shorted out and the fuse had blown.

I spent the evening replacing the bass skin on the Dhol I have, It needs to dry over night before I can play it, but I can tell already it will sound really, really good. You may remember the last time I was here I brought that Dhol and gave it to Santhu (this Larry in Pind), well he didn't really bother too much about it and didn't learn to play it so I have told him I'm going to fix it up and keep it. It's been a long day and the heat is pretty unbearable at the moment.

I have put some pictures in today's travelogue of a lightning storm in Basti a few days ago, thanks once again to Derek for teaching me about long exposure. There are also pictures of Kittu doing a repairs on the bullet, if anything goes wrong with it now I'm not spending a penny on it!!!
