Back to Phnom Penh, on another super long bus journey!
We must have dosed off around 1am last night and I didn't sleep at all so at 5.15am I just got up and went onto the roof to watch the sunrise. I hadn't got up to see a sunrise for a while and today's was beautiful. I don't know what it was this morning, but I think it's just when you catch the sunrise without planning for it, it always surprises you with something new, something special. This morning there was a bit of cloud around and the sun rose up between a break in the clouds, the break was just big enough so you could see the whole of the sun for a few seconds, then it was gone again. Ka was already up there, he said he couldn't sleep either. We just had a chat while we waited for the sunrise, talking to him about life in Kratie and how it was for him growing up there, made me want to stay there a few more days to experience more of his little town
We already had our tickets booked and had packed our bags by 7am. I had a bit of breakfast at the guesthouse, and after saying our goodbye, off we went. Pisai and Ka dropped us off at the bus stand and the coach left on time (7.30am). It was another long and tedious journey, much like the rest. I tried to get into reading the book I had leant Derek (I was feeling bad that I'd had it so long, and never got round to finishing it), but my mind kept wondering so I gave up after a while. I tried to shift around and get a double seat to my self, but people kept getting on, so I would have to move again. We stopped for a bit to eat around midday. I ordered this Chicken lemon soup dish that sounded nice, and looked ok, but tasted dreadful. I just couldn't eat it. This is a good time to mention the whole 'food situation'. I have been struggling a lot lately with food. When I left home I was on a veggie flex and kept it up until I got to Sri Lanka, or when I realised I was way too thin. I tried to get some meat (just chicken and fish really) back into my diet. Then in Thailand, all hell broke loose and I was eating anything that came my way (still thin though). Now here in Cambodia, all of the meals are with rice. I have been eating rice for over two months now and I have had my fill of it! Over the past few days I have found a dish that I like and can eat all day long, it's just mixed vegetable noodle soup, simple but effective
Right back to today! Lunch was a major flop, but I made up for it later! We pulled into Phnom Penh about 2.15pm. The bus stopped down the road from where we wanted to go so we collected our bags and just walked the 15 minutes to No.10 Lakeside (the place we were at before). It was so nice coming to a place that you know, you can just tell the touts to do-one and make your own way. Coming back here was coming home, everyone and everything was familiar to us. Before we had even checked in I asked Thou (the girl at reception) to order me a Chicken Burger with fries. By the time we had checked in and dropped our bags my food was ready, now that's what I call timing! It was still early and I thought it would be a waste to just sit in the GH, so we went to see the Palace complex. We didn't bother going in to the palace but just had a general wonder around. Phnom Penh is no different to any other big city really, everyone is just getting on with their day to day life. We came across some kids playing in the street by the palace, we went over to take pictures and they started begging for money, one of them held on to Derek's hand and didn't let him go for ages
We came back to the GH around 6pm. I just chilled in the room (yep catching up with more travelogues) and Derek was in the lounge enjoying real draft Angkor beer. They have fixed the internet and at the GH and they have a wireless network, Derek fixed it so I could log onto it for free so I made the most of it. Downloaded a ton of e-mails, rang home and spoke to my folks in India. Bit of a mess with the tickets for India though, I thought I would see my folks over there but they are flying out the morning of the 12th and I get there in the evening, that same day. I will try to change the tickets but if it costs too much then I'll have to leave it.
We went to the Indian restaurant for our dinner, and yes the food was spot on, again!
It's been a long day and there is more to come tomorrow. We leave here again at 7am and take another 5-hour bus down to Kampot, it's in the south of Cambodia.
Oh by the way GH is for guesthouse, but I'm sure you all knew that, right?
