Leaving home from home...
It was weird leaving home and the Punjab behind today, I have spent over 6 months there since Jan 2005, that a long time! Although it has wore me out it has really given me a feel of what it would be like to live there. It's all good-and-well saying Punjab is wicked when you come here for 3 weeks and get driven around everywhere in nice taxi's, but living here is a different ball game altogether. I know towards the end I was probably sounding fed up with the place but that's just me, I get bored quick. I think that India and defiantly the Punjab are not really holiday destinations more like life experiences, its not for everybody but its an eye opener, life in the west is very cushty and most people out there don't even realise it! (yeah that's all you people on the dole, having a moan about the state of the economy and all the refugees!). At least I know now if I wanted to, I could live there
Anyway back to today. I didn't sleep very well last night, I think I'm going to be ill again (lets hope not hey). I took the car back to Rurka this morning, Soma's mum stayed there and I said my final goodbye to her, she has been really good to me and I'm going to miss her the most. I brought the bullet back to Pind, another great journey! I'm going to miss that bike too! We were back in Nakodar for around 2.30pm and decided to pay a visit to Lukha's Koo (remember my dad's best friend, with the farm house?). Larry was with me and we stopped there till 5, Lukha just wouldn't let me go he was giving me payback not visiting them as much as I should have. I spent a lot of time there when I came at the beginning of 2005 and would have loved to do the same this time around, but when I first got here it was just too cold to go anywhere, then the girls came and then my trip to Rajasthan. Still I guess there is always next time.
When I got back to Pind there was just enough time for a quick repack, I tried to take out some of the stuff I didn't really need, but there wasn't that much of it! I went to do my final 'matha tekh' at Baba Mothi's and the Jaterey di Jagah. I tried to get my head down for a bit but I didn't get very far before Gagan came over at 6.30pm, he had arranged for a friend of his to drop us up to Nakodar bus stand for 7pm
We got to the bus stand and the Delhi bus was already there, I went up to the counter to try and get tickets, I've already told you that the queuing system in India is none existent, well here it was worse there were around 30 people all trying to get a ticket from one counter. I eventually got ours so we got on the bus, myself, Gagan and of course Larry. We had a row of seats at the back and put my rucksack at the end of the row. The Ticketwala came on the bus and tried to get me to put it on top of the bus, yeah I don't think so buddy. I would rather pay for another seat than have to do that! The bus was going to stop at Ludhiana so people who were going there had to stand but we had our seats and although they were rock hard there was enough legroom (just!) so that was OK. We left Nakodar just after 8pm. Oh I forgot to say, when the driver tried to start the bus the battery was flat so some people got off and pushed it, what a great start (and it was just the start). This being a Punjab-roadways bus, it stopped whenever it looked like someone was going to get on, even if they didn't! So it took a while to get to Ludiana. About 30 minutes out from Nakodar this guy got on the bus from Noor Mehal and sat on the row behind us. He started talking to the guy sitting next to him, loud kind of talking, the kind of talking half the bus could hear!!
We got off near the bus stand and took an Auto-rickshaw to Paharganj, the first guy wanted Rs130 and then we got the next guy to take us for Rs30 (bit of a difference). After traipsing up and down Arakashan Road looking for a place to stay that was not trying to rip us off we got a room at the Maharaja Hotel, it was my last night here and it was 4.30am so I wanted a decent room (I was paying for it anyway, just like everything else the whole time I have been here, but anyway!). I have a bed to myself and the other two are sharing, I am defiantly going to get a good night sleep tonight! One more day of this and I'm out of here and although a part of me will miss it most of me just want to move-on QUICK!!!
