From there we drove around Custer National Park. What a drive! Through single lane tunnels only 9ft wide and along roads barely wide enough for two cars with sheer drops on either side. We saw buffalo and pronghorns, but no moose. Really tired when we got back, but went for a refreshing ice cream with a home made waffle cone! The really excellent Motel 6 had a Pizza Hut phone number on its key, so pizza it was and crashed!
A long day in the car, but not many miles travelled! Shame we had to backtrack 50 miles to find a road that went across the Black Hills! We went toMount Rushmore to see the truly iconic mountain carvings of the four presidents, Washington, Roosevelt, Lincoln and Jefferson. The story of how they were conceived ( as a tourist attraction ) and actually carved was fascinating. Then on to the even bigger but incomplete ( and will be for at least 50 years ) Crazy Horse memorial. No federal funding for this, although it has been offered at least twice , the owners/ sculptors/ commissioned family believe private enterprise should pay, so fleece the public at every opportunity.
