Leaving Malaga airport and still learning the car's controls (this has got to be the most fraught exercise devised by man - strange car, strange roads, at the end of a journey) we rolled into the Malaga road system and looked for Marbella. I resisted the (serious) temptation of heading east to a little town called 'Nerja', which we had visited several years ago and where I had first fallen in love with Spain. Now going west we were heading for our rendezvous in Portugal.

Using the car hire company's area map, we managed (after a bit of unplanned sightseeing) to leave Malaga and were progressing along the coast with a sunny, blue sea at the side of us. We knew in this off peak season that there would not be many places open and (as well as wanting to make a little progress from Malaga) we decided to stop as soon as possible.

We found a hotel (the 'Paloma Piedra' or Stone Dove) at the side of the A7 in 'Estepona' and stopped. A little old lady was surprised to see us and we booked in, being the only ones in the hotel.

There was no restaurant open, so we drove a few kms to 'San Luis de Sabinillas' and found a café. We were now so cold and tired we couldn't face a full meal and were glad of just hot soup. After this we drove back to the hotel, got some extra blankets and before 7.30 pm collapsed in bed. Indeed a long day!

Distance driven               96 kms                        (60 miles)
