A fine but cloudy morning, which made it feel a bit more humid. We drove south on the 'Captain Cook Hwy 44" from Port Douglas to 'Smithfield Heights', another good sized shopping mall. After checking out the new ATM card it was a visit to the dentist here for a replacement filling.

Job done and we turned inland into the 'Barron Gorge national park', for a short walk into the rainforest there and a view of the falls, which have a small dam above them used for hydro electric power. There was a little water coming over the quite high falls.

In the nearby tourist village of Kuranda we had a quick lunch before returning back down the steep, twisty road to the main highway, reaching 'Cairns' by mid afternoon. In the city we found a printers and picked up a pile of blank cards for luggage labels Captain Cook statue

It was then a short drive to the airport, stopping en route to fill the car up with petrol. We were now paying around 150 Australian dollars a litre, about seventy five pence sterling.

We had enjoyed Queensland and had even reached up here, which is referred to as 'FNQ' or 'Far North Queensland'. The one thing that was missing was crocs. Norah had seen a news report early last year saying that crocs were proliferating all around the Cairns area and were becoming a social danger. This replaced her concern about funnel web spiders and brown snakes, both pretty venomous, but we saw no sign of any of these three dangerous creatures.

The car returned, we checked in for the flight to 'Darwin', passed through security and then waited in the departure lounge for our early evening flight out of Queensland. There was no duty free area, maybe because this was a domestic flight and so Cairns gets a Johnny Walker rating of zero.
