Our car, a Suzuki SX4, loaded, we drove out of 'Ballina' and headed north on the coast road. This was towards the 'Gold Coast', the famous Australian holiday area south of 'Brisbane'.

We stopped off at 'Cape Byron', the most easterly point of mainland Australia. Parking near the lighthouse and looking out from the point there were whales swimming by. We stopped in the nearby holiday town of 'Byron Bay' for a sandwich.

Back on Pacific Hwy 1 we continued north, still with many sugar cane fields. Near 'Billinudgel' we left Hwy 1 and turned inland on the 'Tweed Valley' tourist route. Just through the village the road signs disappeared at a junction and we chose a direction. Half an hour later we were south of our starting point and trying to get back to the Hwy for a restart. As before, the Aussies are not big on road signs.

Crossing the Hwy from another direction we picked up the Tweed Valley signs and through fields and woods, finally managed to find our way to 'Murwillumbah', a big town on the Tweed river. Here we found a motel, did some shopping and had an easy night.

Distance driven    145  km                       90 miles
