After another heavy night's rain, we set off on a cloudy morning across a long, single lane bridge at the bottom of the 'Firth of Thames' and then north up its west side. The quiet roads ran through a very flat area with many fields of dairy cows and a lot of wildlife.
We decided to plod on through to Auckland, where we extended the car hire, before dropping in at the Canon service depot and collecting our repaired camera that had expired after the Antarctic journey. Going through Auckland it had started to rain, which gradually became very heavy, causing difficult driving conditions in the heavy, city motorway traffic.
Clearing Auckland, the rain stopped and we headed north on Hwy 1 and then turned north east to the 'Northland' coast, where we finally stopped for the night at Leigh, a quiet, small town near to the coast. We were the only people stopping at the motel and there were no restaurants or cafes in town. We found a small store and bought a sumptuous tea - bacon and beans! It started to rain, which grew steadily heavier and continued all through the night.
Distance driven 295 Km 183 miles
