The two hour, 9pm flight was delayed for 30 minutes waiting for a connecting flight. We had already boarded when the connection arrived, the plane filled up and off we went. I always like to rate a pilot as good, if he rolls round from the taxiway onto the runway without stopping and then powers on into the takeoff. This is a throwback to my first ever holiday flight in the 70's, when an Air Malta pilot, after a serious delay, taxied and then put on full power in a stretched Boeing 707 before he was round the taxiway and on the runway! Now that was impressive.
Into the night sky, bank round to miss the mountain in front and then watch the lights of Quito disappear below us. An uneventful flight, broken only by the flight meal of a club sandwich and then a really nice, smooth landing at Lima. As we walked down the plane I glanced into the cockpit, OK - always the big kid and saw a young guy in the Captain's seat! What was it they said that when Policemen look young? This was just as the First Officer, a pretty young woman came off the flight deck! Ye Gods - I'm finding that chauvinism dies hard !!!!!!
Very friendly (and quick) immigration and then the baggage game! One bag was just coming round the carousel, another was at the side, having been pulled off already and the third soon followed. Thank you Gods - Viva Peru!
Taxi through the modern streets, with many casinos and bingo halls (is that another British gift to the world?) and the signs of the American influence of fast food chains, to our hotel in a quiet suburb, where we arrived after midnight and I was struggling to walk. Straight to bed tired out.
Tuesday 22nd
Up early as there was building work going on next door - no we're not in Spain and after a quick breakfast we looked out for our tour guide. There had been a welcome session yesterday, as the arrival day, whilst we were still in Quito so we still needed to announce our presence. I was walking a little easier so we'll see.
