Leaving the Hoover Dam behind we headed east, skirted Las Vegas ( I wasn't feeling brave enough to face it again just yet) and then turned south west on I15. Having gained an extra hour to the day we wanted to make some more miles. Even though it didn't stop it going dark just as soon !

We were passing through the Mojave Desert in the dark and even though I would have liked to have seen it, we wanted to clock up the miles and make it an easy final run in to Los Angeles. After the red sunset glow had died away over the hills, the long, mainly straight road, was just a  line of hundreds of cars and trucks travelling in each direction of the two lane highway. On hills there was a truck lane and you closed up to the big American trucks, that looked like giant felled christmas trees, all lit up in the dark. A  rush of lights and then they were past. There were no other lights in the surrounding desert darkness.

We saw a sign for 'Baker' and pulled off I15. It was all restaurants and gas stations but hardly any motels. We found one at the end of the road and booked in. 'Arne's Royal Hawaian Motel' had seen better days and no - the 'Governator' hasn't gone into real estate ! The door lock was sticking and a lock on the rear patio was broken. Fortunately we were on the second floor and I was able to wedge it. The room was 'basic' but what do you want for 49 dollars (24 pounds)!! You could see out into the desert and the long straight road stretching to the horizon with an endless line of headlights.

We ate at the "Mad Greeks', a quite good pseudo greek restaurant and then returned and crashed out.
