We had walked the previous evening into the "old" town of Sherbrooke to a small restaurant that used to be the town's hotel in the 1800's. What we hadn't seen in the dark was that the rest of the town had been maintained and restored to that period - similar to Beamish in the north east of the UK. There was a working blacksmiths, a drug store, potters, court house and an old jail, farms and a school - everyone in period dress and all very well set up. It looked just like a film location.

The weather was still in the high 70's and we are starting to wonder how long this could last. The weather is rated to be very changeable up here and it goes wet and misty, which means we won't be able to see much.

We carried on up the coast road north east and crossed the Canso causeway, a big embankment across a narrows and onto Cape Breton Sherbrooke village street

. Now starting to really get used to the car. We had hired a Ford Focus - sound familiar ?, automatic with aircon, sunroof and cruise control - I called it warp drive, just set it and go !!   In Canada the car lights are on all the time, Volvo style and petrol ? - we paid just over 1 dollar Canadian per litre - 50p !!

We were aiming for the Cabot trail and the Cape Breton Highlands. We booked into a motel,  found a small restaurant overlooking the sea and enjoyed a fabulous sunset and fresh scallops. Yes - this sure is roughing it.
