Puerto Madryn is a nice coastal town. A little windy on the days that we were there but still a great place to wander on the beach and see the sights.
We walked the 3 km from our hostel to the EcoCentro this afternoon. It is a new building with fantastic exhibits and stunning views. There was a lot of information about the marine animals in the area as well as what it is about the ocean that attracts them to Puerto Madryn. There were hands-on displays and even a room where you could sit on the stone covered floor like you were on the bottom of the ocean and listen to the whales talking. There's also a great piece of text on one of the walls which is written by one of the first men to map out the Valdes Peninsula. He reckons that it was his ability to "float upwards from the ground" that enabled him to draw such accurate maps in the days before satellite technology was available. Not before the days when magic mushrooms were available, we suspect..
A short walk on the coast from the Ecocentro was another smaller, not quite as fancy museum about the first Welsh settlers to land and make their homes in caves along the shore. The museum housed some interesting documents and it all painted a harsh picture about what life must have been for these pioneers. They must have been shocked to find such barren land and such winds. Living in the shallow caves would have been hard with only one up-side, the beuatiful Patagonian sunsets (which we finally saw today).
DAILY FACTS
- Stayed at: Hostel Internacional Puerto Madryn. Helpful owners and a good room with a good kitchen. 2 blocks from the beach. Recommended.
- Out for food at: Cantina El Nautico. Excellent seafood / fish. The long queue to get in proves it. Book earlier in the day. Recommended.
