Sunday

At first sight, it seems as if there is not much to do in the little one-horse town of Gaiman. There is of course the Welsh history of the town, which was the reason we went there, but considering it is such a little place there are also some unique and tasty culinary experiences to be had.

When we arrived late afternoon after our Penguin trip, we started with a Welsh tea. Again, an endless pot of milky tea and plates of cakes but a reasonable size this time, not like the cholesterol-fest in Trevelin.

Afterwards we went to have a look at the museum dedicated to the Welsh settlers which is built in the old statoin house 01 - More welsh dragons in Argentina

. The Argentinian running the place is from Welsh stock (as are a lot of the inhabitants of Gaiman) and he had a nice little chat with Steve in Welsh. Steve: It's not often you hear the words, "Fabio 'dw i" - it was quite surreal.

Back at the hostel, we got chatting to a nice Canadian called Claire who we went out for dinner with. It turned out that she worked in the same department in the University of British Columbia as one of Tara's best friends from Calgary. The world gets ever smaller.

Monday

We started the day with a visit to the unique Parque El Desafio which is a collection of sculptures and art pieces built entirely from rubbish. Empty drinks cans, empty bottles, wrecks of cars, you name it, this guy has turned it into a sculpture. The artist has spend 26 years on the project so far and shows no signs of stopping.

For lunch, we got a bus to Dolavon. We didn't find much there, apart from a legendary place for local meats and cheeses. This turned out to be merely the start of our food experience for the day 02 - Very genteel

. That evening we went to the Angel restaurant. Owned by an eccentric man, we ate in his elaboratly decorated house and had what he had cooked up that day (no menus here). Chicken with strawberry sauce and Swiss roll with Tuna mayo and carrots were the order of the day! This is such a random place...

DAILY FACTS

- Stayed at: Hosterķa Gwesty Tywi. Nice place with an owner of Welsh heritage, although we never met her. Recommended.

- Out for food at: La Molienda, Maipu 61, Dolavon, 9017. (Tel 02965 492290 or mobile 15518707). When the buns came out of the wood burning oven we know we would be in for a treat. The wooden board full of different varieties of meats and cheeses did not disappoint. Worth the half an hour bus ride out to Dolavon. Recommended.
