The birthday festivities were soon forgotten this morning when we were woken up at 4.30am by candlelight. No hot showers for us intrepid desert travellers though, just straight into the jeep for a half hour drive to the geyser fields near to where we slept. You have to get there early in the morning so that you can see the condensation of the hot steam in the freezing cold morning air. We were both loving being here - walking amongst the steam and seeing the ghostly silouettes of people. It's difficult to convey the noise and atmosphere in photos which is why we took so many videos.
From there it was on to the thermal springs for breakfast. We both had great intentions of going for a swim, but when Omar parked the jeep 5 minutes walk away and with the morning air still so freezing we both chickened out! Plenty of hot springs in Canada to go to anyway. At the hot springs, we saw Alan and Mathilde, an Australian / French couple who we'd seen twice before in different places during our travels down the continent. When things like that happen it's almost destiny that you should meet up for a drink, so we arranged to meet up later that day in San Pedro.
We then ploughed on through the Salvador Dali stones (not that impressive as we only saw them at a distance) to Laguna Verde. After that it was on to the border with Chile where we caught a bus on to San Pedro de Atacama.
