Happy Birthday to me, Happy Birthday to me....Happy Birthday dear Tara...Happy birthday to me!
A very pleasant 3 hour bus trip on Tour Peru yesterday brought us into the sleepy town of Copacabana, just over the border with Peru.
We had read in the "splurge" sction of the Lonely Planet that for USD$32 a night you could rent the honeymoon suite in the Hotel La Cupula. Tara: I had hinted to Steve that it might be nice to stay somewhere nice for my birthday but the sneaky boy told me he called the hotel and it was booked! So when we arrived and got the suite it was a nice surprise!
We had our own little cabin up on the hill overlooking Lake Titicaca. It was 2 levels with floor to ceiling glass and amazing views. The two hammocks outside made it all the better! The hotel also has a great restaurant so we didn't have to go far or spend much for a great meal (2 main meals and 2 drinks - 4 pounds!!). Unfortunately Tara's stomach was feeling a little dodgy so plain old spaghetti for her. Tara: Boo hoo!
Later that night there was a massive electical storm and with our great lake views we were treated to quite the show while we sipped our wine all cozy in our cabin!
The next morning we decided to walk 17km to the village of Yampupata. (Steve: The Spanish speakers amongst you may find it amusing that I kept pronouncing the town as "Yampa-puta" which got me a few strange looks from the locals!) We decided to do this trek and not head out to Isla del Sol because we'd sort of had enough of the hassle of ferrying out to and staying over on islands after our Amanti experience. We decided to take the easier option although people we talked to who hiked over on the island said it was great and well worth it.
It was a nice walk with coastal paths leading through little farms although there wasn't a massive amount to see on the way. We got to the end and were dreading having to go out to Isla del Sol to catch the ferry back, a 3 hour ordeal so were thrilled when a boy offered to take us straight back to Copacabana in his boat. Steve got to sit at the front like a seagull which he was very pleased with. Very nice day out. Tomorrow we plough on further into Bolivia!
DAILY FACTS
- Stayed at: Hotel La Cupula, Copacabana - Cracking place! Not budget prices but and excellent place to stay with a great restaurant. Highly recommended.

tara, happy birthday!
stevo, with your new beard you look a lot like gregory peck as ahab hunting down moby dick ...
Happy Birthday Tara!
Wow, both of you celebrating your birthdays within the same week, what fun! The hostal looks amazing... as I read I make notes of all the wonderful places you've been staying in, as one day I hope to take Russ (my boyfriend) to all these recommendations of yours.
Now, getting to the beard, can't really avoid it can we when you've given us not one, but two photos of this creature growing on your face. All you need now is a stick of hay sticking out of your mouth, and you're all set to move into one of the Mormon communities in deepest Pennsylvania Steve.....for the love of God, and poor Tara I'm guessing.... SHAVE ;)
Ciao for now and looking forward to the next installment,
Maria
