A nice and short evening bus took us down to Ica last night. Once there we hot-footed it straight out to the Oasis village of Huacachina.
What with having arrived at night and us travelling through the desert, we couldn't really get a feel for the area, but when we woke up in the morning we were quite surprised to see a whopping sand dune right behind our hostel! Steve had a bash at climbing it after breakfast, but in the 11am sun, he realised the error of his ways and only made it halfway up.
This morning, we popped into Ica to do a few bits of "personal administration" and then came back to the hostel to relax by the pool. At 4pm, when the heat of the day had died down a little we went on a brilliant dune-buggy trip. There were 7 of us in this big green dune-buggy that looked like a giant roller-coaster car
After the buggy trip we had a nice meal by the lagoon. The TV had a programme on about Steve Irwin in Spanish - little did we know it was his obituary.
Onwards to Nazca to see the lines tomorrow. After our lazy phase of travelling we're back in full-on backpacker mode!
DAILY FACTS
- Stayed at: El Huacachinero, Huachachina. Great new clean place with legendary hot showers and a very pretty swimming pool area. They run a good dune buggy trip as well. Highly reccommended.

"Dude" Steve and his mighty steed
. The driver absolutely tore it up over the massive sand dunes in the area and provided us with sand boards to try our hand at a graceful descent. We also had a go at lying on the boards on our stomachs before sliding down. Great fun, but it's amazing where the sand can get when you end up face down in a dune for the tenth time. After the buggy trip we had a nice meal by the lagoon.
