Orlando - St Augustine

Today we set off on a series of three single-night stops on our way up the east coast to Washington. The first leg of the day was a short one, driving for about an hour to the Kennedy Space Centre after a buffet breakfast which included steaks and fried chicken, if that took you fancy at 7 in the morning!!

The Space Centre is huge, set on a massive amount of land. We were given about 5 hours to explore the site, which included a shuttle launch simulator and an IMAX movie. We hopped on a shuttle bus to take us around the various areas of the centre including the shuttle-assembly building and the launch observation area (located about 3 miles from the actual launch pads). We were unable to go inside the assembly building because the space shuttle Discovery was currently being attached to the fuel tank and booster rockets. I'm not a huge space nut but it was interesting to look at the modules being prepared to be sent up to the international space station and to walk through the original control room (transported to Kennedy Space Centre from Houston) from the Apollo 11 mission to the moon.

After lunch we were back on the bus for another reasonably short drive to St Augustine, the oldest continually-inhabited town in the United States. We had dinner at a pizza/pasta buffet place across the road from our hotel. Shortly after finishing our meal we noticed a small hole in the window above our table that had a strong resemblance to a bullet hole.....sure enough, a shot had been fired into the restaurant a few weeks earlier and they hadn't bothered to replace the window...only in America!!!

That night we were treated to a 'ghost tour' of the town. To be frank, it was the biggest load of crap I have ever heard. The stories kept changing as we went along and the guide kept talking about these orbs that appear in peoples photos....strangely enough, these orbs had a striking resemblance to street lights!! On the positive side, we did get to have a look around the oldest town in the US and meet some interesting (a.k.a. weird) locals.
Once the tour had ended a group of us headed back to the hotel for drinks and card games. Some of the other managed to find a pub in the sleepy town and by all accounts, had an awesome time. I wish we had gone along!!!
