Flag of Costa Rica  , Province of Alajuela,
Thursday, July 1, 2010

So after a week of reggae still ringing in my ear, I left the dreadlocks behind and headed for the mountains and volcanoes. Now Costa Rica's known for its parks and wildlife and I could see why. After skirting the coast for about an hour I turned inland to the hills. The rainforest was as you would expect…raining !!! but very nice. Found a lodge place just outside San Jose in the mountains with a view of the lights of the capital.

Next morning had the vision of going to this "active volcano" area. My very bland map, which was old, didn’t show a lot of new roads and not much detail sort of told me I should be able to get to this area without going into the city, this was a good thing as I always get lost and lose time in cities trying to navigate through so if you can avoid them, the better.

Now the lady at the lodge reception said to go round the city and follow the Pan Americana until a certain turnoff, I wasn’t sure as I felt like I should turn sooner and take the back roads. Now one town’s name I knew was on the way so I saw a sign with that name and turned…only to find that the town was there, 200 metres from the highway…caught again with this “using the same name”  thing all Latin American countries have. They have no imagination when naming towns, so many have the same name and they can be quite close to one and other, probably OK if you live there but otherwise……no.

So I continued into the city, took a couple of turns which looked like they could be major bypass type roads and found myself completely lost in San Jose. Now asking directions can be a bit dicey sometimes but when you’re not sure what town to ask directions too….that’s a recipe for disaster. Soooo, 1 hours after I started I found myself back on the main road….5 k’s from the lodge I had stayed in the night before…well that’s the tour of San Jose covered !!!

Next try I decided to stay on the main road in and take it all through the city, great plan until the road ends at a T intersection and no signs telling you where anything is….so back to asking directions and eventually found my way out of the city (been there for like 3 hours in total) and heading for my destination. Finally wound up through the mountains and spied the volcano, smoke coming from its top. Well that was “the long way round”…… impressive hill though….
