Palmer is also where the main highway eastward veers off, so I take that to Glenallen, before heading north again to Delta Junction. The next day is one long drive through the vastness and openness of Alaska. There's really nothing quite like it, and the idea that it’s all tundra and nothingness could not be farther from the truth. That part of Alaska starts ABOVE the Arctic Circle. The area below is surprisingly lush and beautiful, miles and miles of unobstructed Nature. You can drive past glaciers as though they were just another roadside attraction, and see the occasional moose or bear making poo-poo along the roadway. Does a bear shit in the woods? In fact the area around Anchorage is really more spectacular than that around Fairbanks, which is fairly flat and featureless. It’s almost literally the polar opposite of Arizona, with the outback loop back up to Fairbanks passing through Paxson instead of Arizona’s Payson on the way to Flagstaff. I spend the night in Delta junction, which I guess would correspond to Winslow in the Arizona analogy.
