The wind had subsided when we woke so I did some laundry at the lavateria across from Motel Las Ballenas and then met the Eurons to continue our travel south.
San Ignacio, our stop for the night, is an inland oasis shaded by thousands of date palms (Mexico is number three in global date production after the U.S. and the middle-east) and cooled by the Rio San Ignacio. The original Cochimi Indians called the area Kadakaaman which means creek of reeds. This small town has a beautiful plazuela surrounded by colonial buildings and the 1786 Dominican Mision San Ignacio Kadakaaman. An earlier 1728 Jesuit mision sat on the same spot. The beautiful Mision, with four feet thick walls, is fully restored and in use today.
We parked along the canal for the night at the Cafe Mikasa. The owner couldn't speak a single word of English but she was very nice and only charged seventy pesos. After she closed the restaurant, we pulled a few of her Corona chairs down by the canal to drink our cerveza and enjoy the pleasant night.
