Day One Seventy-Four
Entry 75 of 119 | show all | print this entry |
The first stop this morning was at the tiny combination TelNor office, Internet cafe, and tienda to call home and check e-mail. We spent the rest of the day exploring the cultural attractions of Bahia de Los Angeles consisting primarily of the Museo de Naturaleza y Cultura featuring Indian, ranching, and marine artifacts and Programa Tortuga Marina. The sea turtle program rescues young sea turtles caught in fishermen's nets, raises them to an age that will ensure a greater chance of survival, and then releases them into the Pacific with tags for tracking. One of their captive raised turtles was documented in Japan over a year after release off the Baja coast.
Antonio, the college professor from the University of Ensenada who runs the sea turtle program, owns a rustic campo north of Bahia de Los Angeles called Campo Archelon named after a giant fossilized turtle or tortuga found in the area. Campo Archelon, with a beautiful view of the bahia, consists of several octagonal palapas with four stone sides providing some shelter from the winds. The setting was nice so we decided to stay the night.
Despite the stone sided palapas, Mesa La Zacatera to the west, and Isla Angel de La Guarda across the Canal de Las Ballenas the winds became uncomfortably strong by nightfall with the blowing sand stinging like tiny darts against the skin. Needless to say, bedtime came early tonight.
