The wind never seemed to stop blowing and the nights were getting colder and colder at Joshua Tree, so Kudzu and I moved on the Salton Sea State Recreation Area in search of warmth. Salton Sea is 228 feet below sea level and almost to the Mexican border and on its shores we were rewarded with temperatures adequate for a few days of sun bathing. Kudzu and I accomplished very little during our stay other than a couple of short runs and spending our daylight hours sitting in the warmth of the sun and reading books.
Salton Sea was accidentally created when a 1905 effort to divert the Colorado River for agricultural purposes went awry creating a 360 square mile lake that is today 35 miles long, 15 miles wide, and because of the natural salinity of the basin it flooded it is saltier than the Pacific Ocean. Many people lost their homes as a result of the flood but the upside is that Southern California has a great state park and the Salton Sea today benefits more than 350 species birds and has replaced wetlands lost to agricultural and industrial development.
