Day Forty-Four
Entry 45 of 119 | show all | print this entry |
After four days of camping in the desert, I decided it was time for a soft bed and a hot shower but first I needed to get some new clothes before we go any further. Since we have been on the road I've been eating healthy and getting lots of exercise walking Zoobley so I've lost about thirty pounds and nothing fits anymore. Kudzu and I made a quick trip to an outlet mall at the Nevada border to stock up on jeans, shorts, and T-shirts.
Back in California, we found a cheap room for the night at Arnie's Royal Hawiian Motel in Baker, CA. Baker is a tiny town along I-15 between Death Valley and Mojave which serves primarily as a rest stop on the way from LA to Las Vegas. Baker's main claim to fame is that it is the home of the world's tallest thermometer which at 134 feet was erected to memorialize the hottest temperature recorded in Death Valley. Zoobley slept while I checked in and had a short run in the desert before heading to the self-proclaimed "World Famous" Mad Greek Restaurant. Despite the wide variety of gyros and fruit shakes offered, I opted for the Onassis Burger and a cold beer. The burger, named fro the Greek tycoon, was toped with about a half-pound of pastrami and looked much better in the picture than it actually tasted. "World Famous" turned out to be something of a stretch.
