Day Forty-One
Entry 38 of 119 | show all | print this entry |
Kudzu and I moved to the Texas Springs Campground at Furnace Wells today and spent a lazy day reading and exploring the desert on foot. Furnace Creek is the sight of an old resort hotel and before that a cattle ranch. It sits at 190 feet below sea level and hosts Park headquarters.
The Western practice of allowing hotels, restaurants, and stores inside Park boundaries is new to me and it seemed strange to be able walk across the road to have dinner or buy a T-shirt and a six pack of beer. I'm not sure I like the idea since there are plenty of places for commercialism outside the limited lands set aside for future generations. Nevertheless, the hot chili and apple pie I had for dinner in the little restaurant really hit the spot before heading back to my sleeping bag for the night.
