Day Thirty-Six

Kudzu and I drove like mad today to get to someplace warm. We passed through Tucson which appeared to be a clean and attractive city but we didn't stop in favor of getting farther south and west.
We stopped for the day at Picacho Peak State Park just a few miles from Interstate 10 midway between Tucson and Phoenix. The scenery is surreal to a Southerner like myself. There are thousands of Saguaro cacti dotting the landscape and 3,500 foot Picacho Peak rising from the desert floor. Picacho in Spanish means peak so I suppose the name is a little redundant, but it is an imposing image nonetheless. The peak has been used as a landmark for travelers and explorers for over three hundred years and is mentioned in the records of various expeditions as early as the 17th century. The desert floor near the peak was even the site of a brief skirmish between California Union forces and a Confederate scouting party in 1862.
Picacho Peak receives five Zoobs in the state park category. Everything is clean and new, the rangers are friendly and helpful, and trails are well marked. The restrooms and showers are cleaner than even those in the best hotels. More thumbnails ...
