Where I stayed
Duino, Hotel Garni Aurora,
This mini-adventure began early on a Wednesday morning on the 28th of June, 2007. 7:00 a.m. and I take my one lone bag, I'm overnighting so I am not carrying a whole lot of stuff. I know customs will disallow certain substances like gels and thick liquids so shampoo, conditioner and toothpaste will be on the shopping list first thing I arrive in Italy. I have no trouble catching a bus to Liverpool Street satation where I must catch a train to Stanstead Airport and arrive at the ticket office there around 7:30 a.m. The train for Stanstead Airport leaves around 8 a.m. after some delyas caused by faulty doors and arrives at Stanstead around 9 a.m. So far, the journey to the airport is almost as long as the journey to Italy, which according to my schedule is a scant 10 minutes longer than the one I have just taken.
My eventual destination is Trieste, on the North-Eastern Italian Adriatic Coast, although the aeroporto nearest I can fly to Trieste at any kind of reasonable price is Aeroporto Friuli Venezia Giulia in Ronchi Dei Legionari (and many thanks to Ryanair for a safe and pleasant return journey), and the budget hotel I have chosen for my stay is located almost exactly between the aeroporto and Trieste, in the dainty setting of Duino
The delightful Garni Aurora is located about twenty minutes drive from Ronchi Dei Legionari along the SS14, through Monfalcone and turn off at the sign. Follow your nose, turn left at the Castello Duino (more on that later) and drive 50 metres along the narrow street, on the left there will be a plot guarded by a chain, respect the owners' wish and put the chain back up monce you have parked, then cross the street to the innocent looking frontage with the decorated ceramic number 15, on the other gatepost there will be a modest sign proclaiming Garni Aurora above a one-star. Beneath that will be a plaque displaying the declaration "A Best LOved Hotel Of The World 2007" and that's the introduction. Proceed through the gate after ringing the bell on the left gatepost and be prepared for a very warm and genuine welcome from mine hostess Mariella (I rhymed it with mia bella and Mariella blushed, I rememberred though, and that's more important, at least I think!) who will show you your room(s) and assist with any maps or local colour or information you may ask about after the relaxed and stress-free check-in process. Then you will be handed your keys, told what time breakfast is tomorrow and every day after that (8 until 10 in the morning) for as long as your stay
I marvelled, 12 hours after starting out on public transport in Walworth, London, England, I was driving a rented (thank you EuropCar) Lancia Musa Multijet diesel into Trieste, Italy. It had a manual transmission, and how long had it been since I wrecked the the last manual I drove, overrevving while crunching through gears thinking I was driving like a racing star, with this one it was easy clutch and brake and even less accelerator, the machine took me wherever I wanted to go at the speed I wanted to go at and it sat the road like a princess. The journey took me past coastline, beach, and through a grotto and tunnels as the SS14 snaked its way alongside a mountain range that was casually visiting its relative the sea. rolling into Trieste, the directions clear in my head the streets unfamiliar to my sight I managed to luck my way to the area Mariella suggested I park, and finding a parking would probably have been easier in Manhattan than Trieste as that evening there was a running event on and the square was filled with contestants, their supporters, interested onlookers and tourists, I know cause I was one, a tourist, as well as an onlooker, so does that make me two? Anyway, I was there to take pictures of the architecture, in particular one building, which wasn't on the main square of Trieste, the Piazza Unitas Di Italia, it was off to one side, and held its' own importance, it was the Piazza Guiseppe Verdi where the Teatro guiseppe Verdi is located, and that folks is my dark secret, I was in Trieste to photograph that building, and do the other thing.
