It is organised as a second-rate international beauty contest, with many contestants from former Communist countries.
I seem to recall last time there was some disagreement between the organiser and the contestants, who seemed to me to be quite good but not stunning-looking, and universally over 6 feet tall. And all freezing in Shangrila.

Teenage Ethiopia beauty queen; Bewunetwa Abebe, has arrived in Beijing China along with 40 other beauties from around the World for the start of the 2009 International Beauty and Model festival.
Bewunetwa who was crowned Miss Teen Millennium Intercontinental, becomes the second teenage Ethiopian model from the Ethiopian Millennium pageant to represent Ethiopia at an international beauty pageant.
Miss Teen Ethiopia beauty pageant is exclusively organised and owned by Beauties of Africa Inc under a licence from the Miss Tourism Global organisation and it is the only Teenage beauty pageant in Ethiopia offering opportunities for global travel to Ethiopian teens. The next edition will take place in August 2009.

About Kunming
Kunming is the capital of southwest China's Yunnan province, a primarily agricultural province of 45 million. Kunming has a population of five million and is located in one of the world's most geographically, ethnically, biologically and linguistically diverse regions. Situated at 1,900 meters (6,233ft) above sea level and 25° north of the Equator it has a rather unique and pleasant climate for a Chinese city.
Because of its high altitude Kunming weather is typically characterized by intense sunlight during the daytime and a slight chill at night. When the rest of China is hot, Kunming is one of the country's coolest cities. When the northern half of the country is frozen and covered with snow, flowers are blooming. Hence, Kunming's nickname in Chinese is 'Spring City'.
Kunming sits upon the Yunnan Plateau, which rises toward the Tibet-Qinghai Plateau heading northwest and yields to lower altitude tropical jungle heading southward toward Southeast Asia. The city is surrounded by mountains and is just northeast of Dianchi Lake, the largest lake in the province and the sixth-largest freshwater lake in China.

Kunming to host 2009 Beauty of the World Contest

The annual "Kunming International Cultural Tourism Festival - Kunming Carnival" will begin on May 1st as scheduled. In the meantime, the "International City Ambassador - 2009 Beauty of the World" will undoubtedly become the highlight of the tourism festival this year.
The festival will continue the theme "Gather in Carnivalesque Kunming, Experience Colorful Yunnan", fully display Yunnan's history and culture, folk custom and the charm of tourism activity, and create a tourism cultural brand and image for Yunnan. Besides the opening ceremony, fancy car parade, square carnival, water-splashing activity and the long-street banquet of ethnic features, "International City Ambassador - 2009 Beauty of the World" is added to highlight the festival. The activity is hosted by Kunming Municipal People's Government and undertook by Kunming Xingyao Sports Town Co., Ltd.
"Beauty of the World" is an activity sponsored by World Beauty Congress (WBC), which is an independent international professional beauty contest organizer founded in 1999. The contest has ever been held successfully in Yichang of Hubei, Panzhihua and Jiuzhaigou of Sichuan, Shangri-La and Kunming of Yunnan. "Beauty of the World" is held every two years, and a specific theme is set for each time. "2009 Beauty of the World" is an international city ambassador-themed contest.
