Up until Saturday one of the countries where I have a passport from (yeah, I've got heaps - Nigeria, Thailand, etc) didn't have any medals. Then they got lucky. And according to some skewed stats, per head of population have more medals than almost any other country (except maybe Australia).
And while today China have more gold medals than everyone else, their basketball team went down today, their football team has already been kicked out, and to make matters worse . . . in the hurdles that guy got eliminated. I feel sorry for Liu Xiang because so much expectation had been placed on him, and before the hurdles he injured himself.
What did the fans think:
"I am extremely disappointed and I think he may have wanted to win too much and could have caved under the pressure," said 27-year-old He Sheng.
College student Hu Xinliang, 21, said China had imposed too big a burden of hope on Liu. "He is now free," he said.
