While there was much publicity - negative- about the tour guide turned stabber, who in a rage took a tibetan knife and stabbed 20 or so people in Lijiang's old town last April.

My friend said how she had some guests she was showing around, and one couple went off away from the tour group in the old town square, and they were stabbed by the guy, apparently enraged by being beaten up by local tour guides and arguing over kickbacks and commissions from shops.

My friend tells me how because it was April 1 and a Sunday, that when she rang the police, the hospital and the tour company, no one at first believed her, that many people had been stabbed in the old town. The police were tardy in repsonding. Doctors were away.

The sequel to events is that the guide - from the north of China and recently divorced - got 15 years in jail. Which i guess is better than a bullet to your head.

Two or three people were seriously injured, suffering head injuries.

Chinese tour guide given 15 years in jail for stabbing 20 people

A tour guide who stabbed 20 people in the tourist town of Lijiang in south China's Yunnan Province, in an incident that took place earlier this year, was sentenced to15 years in prison by a local court on Tuesday.

The Lijiang Municipal Intermediate People's Court said it had decided to show leniency to Xu Minchao, 25, since his capacity was limited due to a transient psychosis at the time of stabbing.

Xu had little sleep the night before the stabbing occurred and had been looking after a sick member of his tour group. He experienced insomnia at night and showed signs of transient psychosis during the day, according to a report by the Judicial Expertise Center with the Forensic Medicine Association of China.

Xu has not decided whether to appeal.

Xu, a native of the northeastern province of Heilongjiang, was escorting a 40-member tour group from northeastern Jilin Province to the ancient city of Lijiang on the afternoon of Apr. 1, when he got into an argument with a local guide surnamed Peng, the court heard.

After the dispute, Xu was alleged to have suddenly lost control and pulled a knife on a saleswoman at a roadside souvenir shop. He then stabbed 16 tourists and four locals.

Xu was arrested at around 4:30 p.m. the same day.
